A throbbing hangover is not a good start to a day on the hill, but sometimes you're just determined to get up there. Mynydd Sygyn is an area that i've been looking at on the map for a while now, and it's intriguing bit of low land between the Snowdon Massif and the boggier, less majestic Moelwynion. The highest point is Moel Y Dyniewyd at 382 m so it isn't a seriously challenging climb, but it has to be the roughest terrain you can find at this level. The are is encompassed by the Glaslyn to the north and west, with Nantmor delineating the south, before the land rises again to similar terrain (Yr Arddu) and the heady heights of the Moelwynion themselves.

Llyn Dinas

The walk can start in any of many places, as it is circular. Either at Llyn Dinas, Beddgelert or a layby just out of Beddgelert towards Llyn Dinas. From this point, you cross the river on the road bridge and go over the wall to the right. This takes you along the river until you reach Beddgelert (alternative start) and a road rises sharply left between some houses. Follow this, and the footpath to your right is obvious as it makes its way throught the rhododendrons. What's also clear, is it's steepness. It's a short pull up to the top, but a very steep one. Not for the ramblers and less agile, as it involves areas of easy scrambling that were rather awkward in the wet underfoot conditions. My 'past-it' boots dont help either, and their lack of grip was clear today. About half-way up you cross over another wall.

The top of the path levels off, and you are afforded good views of Snowdon, Moelwynion, Moel Hebog and the estuary towards Porthmadog. Good spot for breakfast. The path then snakes effortlessly along the ridge, and you soon notice the soil beneath your feet, and some of the rocks take on a reddish hue. You also notice that the path appears to take you in circles! It's easy to get disorientated in terrain like this, and at one point i was absolutely surprised to be facing Moel Hebog, when i thought I was going the other way! I wouldnt fancy this place in mist.

The footpath is easy to follow, and today we decided to take the wide, easy path back down to Llyn Dinas. There are alternative descents to Sygyn Copper mine or to Nantmor. The more adventurous (or less hungover) may choose to carry on over the main peak of Moel Y Dyniewyd and down to Nantmor, where the road, in a surprisingly pleasant walk, returns you to Llyn Dinas.

The descent to Llyn Dinas is a good path, and then an equally good path takes you left along the River Glaslyn and to your starting point (which, theoretically could be Llyn Dinas!) in Beddgelert. Overall, a nice bimble for a saturday morning, but i'd have preferred a longer day.

See Sygyn Revisited for a longer route.
